This is the story of a secret wartime mission to Antarctica, where the primary objective was political not military; to reinforce Great Britain's claim to sovereignty of the Falkland Islands Dependencies, under threat from other powers. To achieve this, a small body of men travelled by sea to the remote territory to establish permanent occupation.
Proof of British occupation in the Dependencies was demonstrated by the use of specially produced postage stamps, issued and used from bona fide post offices, operating at the men's Antarctic bases.
From this political initiative grew the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, renamed in 1962 as the, world-renowned, British Antarctic Survey.
