Hits from the Hut CD
Digitally remastered 1930s and 1940s vintage sounds from the frozen south.
Remastered recordings from the music that was listened to at Port Lockroy. The tracks on this CD have been carefully digitised and include 7 recordings from the 78s at Port Lockroy, plus 13 other songs found in the hut by popular artists of the day. Their taste was eclectic from the sophisticatedly droll and drily developed social observations of Noel Coward, through to the witty ditties of comedian George Formby. The irony of Coward drawling his way through ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen Go Out in the Midday Sun’ could not have been lost on the men. More pertinent would have been George Formby’s ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’, and as ‘Drinks Night’ was always held after the weekly clean-up, the words would have resonated with the tired but cheerful group.
